Make fast assessments of jewelry, antiques, and industrial metals.  Find jewelry that is silver or gold plated, if ferrous metals are used as the base metal. If a magnet responds to jewelry, it is not fine silver or pure gold.

Similarly, brass and bronze antiques can be identified by using this magnet.  It will attach to an object if brass plating is used over steel or iron.

It can also help to differentiate polished aluminum from stainless steel, and is very handy for testing industrial metals for recycling.

A must for treasure hunters!

This powerful 5/16" N52
grade neodymium rare earth magnet is encased in 6061 aluminum for durability (prevents chipping and breaking) and comes with a stainless steel split ring and a vinyl cap for when not in use.

This magnet is able to:

  • Identify most steel grades and metal alloys that contain iron, nickel, or cobalt
  • Identify and sort chrome-plated items from polished aluminum, silver, and non-magnetic grades of stainless steel (chrome plating requires a nickel layer, which is magnetic)
  • Identify and sort solid brass and bronze from steel-plated items
  •  Identify fake and plated jewelry, which often have steel or nickel alloys as the base material.  Note:  some alloys, like nickel-silver and German silver are non-magnetic, despite ferrous metals present.

Dimensions:

3/8" (10mm) diameter
1 1/2" (38mm) body length
1/2" (13mm) diameter stainless steel split ring
1 3/4" (45) overall length with ring extended
0.3 oz (10g) weight
6.5 lbs (3kg) pull strength (this IS NOT the lift rating)
